President Obama has arrived in Arizona to speak about his plan regarding the foreclosure cramming plan (crisis) which has slammed Arizona.It has been unofficially stated Az is #3 in foreclosures nationally so why not meet the people of Insane McCain's state to get the public involved in a conversation of what is next ad how do we recover?????
I watched President Obama walk off Air Force One just before 5pm on all local news outlets.I ran out to the hotel to make sure the motorcade got a glimpse of my banner that says" Bring Our Troops Home Now" Get US Out of Iraq!!Somehow i just got into the city of Paradise Valley ahead of the street closures.The police were right behind me closing the street from the highway about 20th street. Parked the car quick fast in a hurry....ran up to the corner just east of Tatum ..i was a moment to late the motorcade had entered another entrance.Darn it i just missed Obama on the hometown turf!!!!!!!!!!!oh well i went to the main entrance ad stood with my banner for 2 hours ....the secret service came over to me 2x after the hotel staff told me permission has been granted to be on the sidewalk.I just stayed there ........no sign of the prez!

Citizen Diplomacy trip to Gaza

A three-person delegation from the peace group CODEPINK just returned from Gaza, entering through the Egyptian border at Rafah. We were able, in a short period of time, to see the terrible devastation and meet with human rights, medical, and women’s organizations. We found the people of Gaza very anxious to have foreign delegations come to learn about their plight and push for an end to the blockade. That is why we are organizing a delegation to return to Gaza in time for International Women’s Day, March 8. The March delegation will be hosted by the Women’s Division of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
There is always the possibility that the Egyptian government won’t let us cross the border. In that case, we plan to set up an encampment near the border to call attention to the need to open the borders and end the siege of Gaza. See more details below. Update on mayors campaign re Iran and the Mayors Conference in Miami

A group of us went to the US Mayors Conference in Miami this weekend to introduce a resolution calling for diplomacy with Iran. We had been successful in getting Mayor Kiss from Burlington, VT, who is on the International Committee of the conference, to introduce the resolution and through a great grassroots campaign, we got 32 cosponsors from all over the country!

The resolution was approved by the International Committee but unfortunately, when it got to the floor for a vote, several mayors voiced support but others voiced opposition. The group was worried about a divisive dispute like the one that occurred last year around a resolution on Iraq (which squeaked through by one vote!) and voted to table the resolution until next year.

While we are disappointed, we did use the time in Miami to get many new mayors on board, and we have since talked to Mayor Kiss, who agrees with us that we should continue the campaign. Our new goal is to get 100 mayors on board, and then take a group of mayors to Washington DC in September to present the resolution to Congress and the White House. We are talking to Cities for Peace about working with us to raise funds for the Washington DC part of the campaign.

We have an updated version of the resolution below that we should put on the website (we’ve removed references to the US Conference of Mayors), and a new, impressive list of the cosponsors (see below). We should continue to encourage our members and other organizations to join us in getting 100 mayors to sign on.

Thanks for all the help. We welcome all suggestions about how to make this campaign as effective as possible.

P.S. You might have heard that Liz Hourican and I got arrested at the conference. Sadly, that is true. We were pre-registered as press for Global Exchange, got our credentials and were participating in the conference when hotel security groups and police surrounded us and told us to leave. It seems they remembered us from the last time we were in Miami speaking out against terrorist Posada Carrilles and were worried that we might embarrass the conference host—Miami’s Mayor Manny Diaz. When we objected to leaving, they arrested us. I was charged with trespassing; Liz was charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. After 8 hours in a cramped, smelly, dirty jail cell with 25 prostitutes, our friends posted $3,500 bail for us and we were released. We have to return to Miami to appear in court next month.

We also had a police motorcycle escort—sometime 4 strong!--following our pick-up truck around Miami. The truck has a “controversial sign” on it saying “Money for Cities, Not War.” Every few minutes we would take out our bullhorn and shout to them, “We are not terrorists. Stop following us.” Working for peace is indeed a hazardous occupation these days!

National Mayors’ Resolution for Diplomacy with Iran

1. WHEREAS, the President and members of his Administration have alleged that Iran poses an imminent threat to the United States, U.S. troops in the Middle East and U.S. allies; and

2. WHEREAS, these allegations are similar to the lead-up to the Iraq War and U.S. occupation, with the selective use of information and unsubstantiated accusations about Iran's nuclear program and its supply of weapons to Iraqi forces as centerpieces of a case to the American people for aggression against Iran; and

3. WHEREAS, Iran has not threatened to attack the United States, and no compelling evidence has been presented to document that Iran poses a real and imminent threat to the security and safety of the United States that would justify an unprovoked unilateral pre-emptive military attack; and

4. WHEREAS, we support the people of Iran who are struggling for freedom and democracy, and nothing herein should be misconstrued as support for the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, but it should be understood that a unilateral, pre-emptive U.S. military attack on Iran could well prove counterproductive to the cause of promoting freedom and democracy there; and

5. WHEREAS, a 2007 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), representing the consensus view all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, concluded that Iran froze its nuclear weapons program in 2003, and an earlier NIE concluded that Iran’s involvement in Iraq “is not likely to be a major driver of violence” there; and

6. WHEREAS, an attack on Iran is likely to cause untold thousands of American and Iranian casualties, lead to major economic dislocations, and threaten even greater destabilization in the Middle East; and

7. WHEREAS, a pre-emptive U.S. military attack on Iran would violate international law and our commitments under the U.N. Charter and further isolate the U.S. from the rest of the world; and

8. WHEREAS, an attack on Iran is likely to inflame hatred for the U.S. in the Middle East and elsewhere, inspire terrorism, and lessen the security of Americans; and

9. WHEREAS, the Iraq war and occupation has already cost the lives of over 4,000 American soldiers, the maiming and wounding of over 38,000 American soldiers, the death and maiming of over one million Iraqi civilians; and

10. WHEREAS, the Iraq War and occupation has cost U.S. taxpayers more than $500 billion, depriving our cities of much-need funds for services and infrastructure; and

11. WHEREAS, except at our peril, we cannot ignore the history of U.S. government misinformation used to inspire U.S. aggression in Vietnam and again in Iraq, as embodied in the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and more recently in the what we know now as false claims of weapons of mass destruction; and

12. WHEREAS, any conflict with Iran is likely to incur far greater costs and divert more precious national resources away from critical human needs,

13. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the undersigned mayors, hereby urge the Bush Administration to pursue diplomatic engagement with Iran on nuclear issues and ending the violence in Iraq; and

14. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we, the undersigned mayors, urge Congress to prohibit the use of funds to carry out any military action against Iran without explicit Congressional authorization; and

15. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that suitable copies of the resolution be forwarded to President George W. Bush and all members of Congress.

Important Update WAr Resistors Oh Canada

Today the Canadian Parliament made a historic vote in favor of U.S. war resisters who are seeking a safe haven in Canada rather than fight in the illegal occupation of Iraq. The vote in the House of Commons was 137-110, with all the opposition parties - the Liberal Party, the New Democratic Party, the Bloc Quebecois and the Green Party - voting for the motion, and the ruling Conservative Party voting against. The Parliament calls on the minority Conservative government to create a program that will allow war resisters to immigrate to Canada, and it also calls for a halt to all deportation proceedings. This is a VERY BIG victory for war resisters in Canada and everywhere. It will strengthen our hand considerably. But the struggle for sanctuary in Canada is far from over. The Conservative government, a staunch ally of the Bush administration, may choose to defy the will of the Canadian people by ignoring this advisory motion. Corey Glass, an Iraq veteran and war resister, was recently ordered to leave Canada by June 12 or face deportation. So even as we celebrate this victory, we must step up the pressure on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Immigration Minister Diane Finley. House of Commons votes to let U.S. War Resisters stay in Canada
OTTAWA, June 3 /CNW/ - The Opposition parties in the House of Commons
joined together today to adopt a recommendation which, if implemented, would
make it possible for U.S. Iraq War resisters to obtain Permanent Resident
status in Canada.
The recommendation was adopted by a majority of Members of Parliament
from the Liberal, Bloc Québécois, and New Democratic Parties. The
Conservatives voted against the motion.
The motion, which originated in the House of Commons Standing Committee
on Citizenship and Immigration in December 2007, calls on the government to
"immediately implement a program to allow conscientious objectors and their
immediate family members...to apply for permanent resident status and remain
in Canada; and...the government should immediately cease any removal or
deportation actions...against such individuals."
Corey Glass, 25, a war resister who came to Canada in 2006 and was
recently told to leave Canada by June 12 or face removal to the United States,
welcomed the vote. "I'm thankful that the MPs voted to let me and the other
war resisters stay in Canada. I'm also thankful to all the Canadians who urged
their MPs to support us."
"This is a great victory for the courageous men and women who have come
to Canada because they refuse to take part in the illegal, immoral Iraq War,
and for the many organizations and individuals who have supported this
campaign over the past four years," said Lee Zaslofsky, Coordinator of the War
Resisters Support Campaign and a Vietnam War deserter who came to Canada in
1970.
The War Resisters Support Campaign is calling on the Conservative
government to respect the democratic decision of the Canadian Parliament and
immediately implement the motion and cease deportation proceedings against
Corey Glass and other war resisters.

Earth ‘Drying Up’Water Rights Activist Will Stand Inside To Accept Award; If Necessary, However, She Will Stand Outside with Protesters

Leave it to the unsinkable Maude Barlow to protest an award she’s about to receive.
The national chairperson for one of the nation’s biggest citizen activist groups, The Council of Canadians, is indeed grateful for the Citation of Lifetime Achievement that she’ll accept at the Canadian Environment Awards in Toronto tonight for her work in raising awareness about the growing global water crisis. However, she says that should there be demonstrators outside the gala protesting Shell - activists who argue the presence of the oil company and award sponsor is a travesty against the global climate change fight - she will show her solidarity by joining them arm-in-arm.
As one of the few energy companies in support of the Kyoto Accord, Barlow notes Shell has made some progressive strides, but she still has some major concerns, among them being its coal-bed methane operations in Northern B.C. and its history in Nigeria.
“I will support the demonstrators outside if they are there. I don’t see it as a choice: You can go inside and accept the award but at the same time make a statement, which is what I’ll do,” says the author of Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis And The Coming Battle For The Right To Water. “You can be critical of these corporations and advance the work together. I think I’ll be doing inside-outside support.”
Barlow plans to address several hackle-raising subjects during her acceptance speech. The main ones include the danger of the corporate takeover of water systems and the government’s enthusiastic plans to sell off Canadian water resources to an already thirsty U.S. - adding the Bush administration and the Pentagon have been getting advice from Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest weapons manufacturer, on how to appropriate water from sources outside of its borders.
Barlow also wants Canada to recognize water as a fundamental human right at the United Nations, and she doesn’t buy Ottawa’s argument to the contrary, saying she can’t imagine a more willing vendor than the Harper government.
“Our government says if water is a human right, we’ll be forced to sell it to Americans, which is crazy,” Barlow said.
“A human right is for people who are dying, it’s not to provide golf courses or swimming pools to wealthy people. It’s just an excuse: The real reason Canada is opposing the right to water at the UN is because in NAFTA, we have supported water as a tradeable good. And it would be a true contradiction - which I think would be great, but they don’t think would be great - if we were to say it was a right.”
The lack of potable water is an emergency for many parts of the globe, says Barlow, and an award ceremony such as this is an opportunity for her to get the word out that this predicament could reach Canadians sooner than they might think.
“The Earth is kind of like an apple that’s green in some parts, but it has brown spots where it’s drying up. We have to have this image in our minds,” she said. “We have to live differently. We have to grow our food differently. We have to stop assuming technology is going to solve everything, because it isn’t. We have to protect our public water systems. This, to me, is an emergency that equals climate change any day. I do what I can to sound the alarm and get this information out to the world.”
Going against the flowBelow are Maude Barlow’s tips on what you can do to save water:
Don’t buy bottled water, says Barlow. “It’s a scam. It’s sitting in plastic, which is made up of fossil fuels and chemicals. Go back to regulated and tested tap water. Last year, we put something like 200 billion litres of water in plastic bottles around the world. Ninety-five per cent of those did not get recycled. This is insane. It’s not acceptable.”
Notify your provincial and federal politicians that you support the campaign for a National Water Act - which would set national water standards, map out ground water supplies and ban the commercial export of water (www.RightToWater.ca).
Use low-flow showerheads, washing machines and dishwashers.

Well, my May 30 - INTERNATIONAL STOP MILITARY RAPE AWARENESS DAY One of the saddest realities I faced when my daughter joined the U.S. Army was that sexual abuse is an epidemic in our military. Both of my grandfathers were in the military, one being a Colonel and the other was a Sergeant, and both were good men. I heard the statistics, but thought I had raised a tough daughter, she could deal with anything they threw at her. I had no idea how many perpetrators and sex offenders lurk and hide in our military. I did not realize was that one out of every three women and one out of every five men in the U.S. Military are sexually assaulted. I still feel shocked by these numbers. And even worse is that it is rare that the perpetrator is prosecuted for the crime of rape/sexual assault. There are some fundamental changes that need to change so that people can serve in our armed forces without fear of being sexually assaulted by their own fellow soldiers. One is hold the command responsible for any type of complaints that are generated. This means independent investigations into any type of complaint is absolutely crucial. All the policies and procedures and task forces in the world won't help if the command is able to choose which one to enforce. Informing young people before they sign away their rights about the statistics of rape in the military should be mandated. Informed and honest recruiting needs to be upheld and not a joke. Once again, the posts haven't been flowing, but the actions have. The year started out with a bang with Liz gracing our landlocked state for a couple of weeks. We were able to put together a fund raising party for IVAW and CODEPINK Phoenix while she was here. The party was hosted by CF and a wonderful time was had by all. We managed to raise enough money to help a couple of CODEPINKers to make their way to Washington, D.C. in March. (Thanks, Kent, for this photo)Maggie made her way to Washington and the CODEPINK house a couple of weeks ago. She spent a lot of time with Liz and was there to support Liz during her trial (you know, the one where, after the Capitol Police viciously manhandled her, they charged her with resisting arrest) where Liz was, of course, found not guilty. They managed to see most of the Arizona legislators and join in an anti-torture action while Mukasey was being questioned by the House Judiciary Committee. This photo is from the CODEPINK DC blog
A couple of us were fortunate enough to take in a Charlie King, Emma's Revolution concert on February 1st and were treated to a new song inspired by CODEPINK's "Women Say 'No' to War" campaign. Then, after a very wet action in front of Senator McCain's office the evening before "Super Tuesday," we were treated to an inspiring evening with Ann Wright at LB's home last Wednesday. She signed her new book "Dissent: Voices of Conscience," and spoke with us about her efforts as a peace activist. With LB's brilliant planning, we were able to raise some more money for IVAW by auctioning off some signed photographs of Colonel Wright.

Finally, just this morning, Maggie, LB, and I were guests on the KPHX show "A Different View" with Rev. Dr. Walt Wieder. It was the first time for Maggie and LB to be on the radio (I think) and they did a phenomenal job! Maggie spoke about her experiences in Washington while LB promoted the Winter Soldier Campaign to take place March 13-16 in Washington (more on this later).

They Can Run . . . and They Can Hide (at least for now)

Yes, I'm back! Let's just say my entourage is very demanding of my time. I've not blogged in almost 3 months, but that doesn't mean that that the Phoenix peace community has been resting on its laurels. In fact, it has been a very busy summer.

But now, to the subject at hand. Our very own Liz is back from the battlefields of Washington, D.C. for a couple of weeks. While it's a nice vacation for her, she wanted to get in some face time with Harry Mitchell while he's back in Phoenix. The last action in a week-long flurry of Mitchell actions occurred yesterday evening.

Rep. Mitchell was set to speak at a Young Democrats function honoring Jim Pederson at the Mondrian in Scottsdale and we were set, of course, to rally for peace outside. Cherub, LB, and I were setting up our banners on the corner when Liz called from inside the hotel to tell us that the event had been postponed. Now, earlier in the week, the head of the Young Dems had called Cherub to complain about our rally, saying that it would "ruin" the event so many young people had worked so hard to put on. He even said that it was "sad" that we would consider putting on our rally at that time. Cherub replied that no, it was sad that mothers and fathers were finding out every day that their children had been killed or injured in the illegal, immoral occupation of Iraq (or words to that effect).

Well, we decided to continue with the rally, but we started wondering why they might have postponed the event. There seemed to be three possibilities:

1. A lot of the Young Dems are still on summer break and complained that they couldn't make the event (which is the excuse they gave);

2. They didn't have many people coming, so they decided to cancel the event; or

3. The Democrats are scared of us (which is what we decided is the case).

Peace organizations, including Code Pink and Gold Star Families for peace, were the darlings of the Democrats until we started putting their feet to the fire and demanding that they do the job they were elected for.

Anyway, if the Young Dems reschedule this event, you can be sure that End the War Coalition, Women in Black, and Code Pink Phoenix will be out there again.

Arlington West

Stearns Pier is, perhaps, the most popular destination in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. And Every Sunday since November 2, 2003, the dedicated members of Veterans for Peace (VFP) have set up Arlington West, a memorial to the U.S. troops who have died in Iraq, just west of the pier. I spent last weekend visiting Santa Barbara and stopped by Stearns Pier to pay my respects. I wore my CODEPINK Phoenix shirt (the longsleeved one -- it was really cold), and had several members of the local VFP approach me to talk about the peace movement here in Phoenix. They were extremely impressed by the way all the peace groups in Phoenix work together. One gentleman, Rod, supplied me with several DVDs intended for our Veterans for Peace and Counter-Recruitment group -- I will deliver these to the appropriate group once I preview them!
Currently, there are 3000 crosses, each bearing a name. Along the sides of the of the memorial, there were some interesting bits of information. The one that shook me the most was the following: "At 3000 crosses, the Arlington West Memorial is 141 feet wide and 310 feet long. A memorial for the Iraqi dead would be 141 feet wide and 12.8 miles long." This is truly a compelling, visceral memorial, much like the Eyes Wide Open exhibit we had here recently. Apparently, about 20% of the crosses have been visited by loved ones and there are quite a few pictures and other items placed with the crosses.
It generally takes the volunteers a couple of hours in the morning to set up the memorial and then some time to take it down at about noon. This weekend, however, the memorial remained up all day and then candles were set up next to all the crosses. The crosses weren't removed until Monday, in honor of Memorial Day. While I was there, one man was constantly caring for the memorial, very carefully raking the sand smooth where people had walked. Several months after VFP started the Arlington West in Santa Barbara, one was started in Santa Monica, too. This kind of visual memorial is one of the most effective ways to show the true cost of this terrible occupation -- human lives.

What your mother always wanted!

Mother's Day Monday went very well last week. There was a steady stream of people coming by the big pink tent to write postcards to Senator McCain, urging him to stop the occupation of Iraq. C made a large "Dear John" letter to Senator McCain stating, "Our relationship never had a chance. Your true love is War -- it must end." We had many more honks for peace than "war fingers," as my entourage calls them. Many people called out their thanks to us for making sure that John McCain knows that Arizona women do not support his call for more and longer war.

We were given a "free speech" zone in front of the office building. We were cordoned off by a strip of pink tape (how appropriate). The building manager was so frightened of our peaceful rally that she even blocked off the sidewalk to the building. Even though we scrupulously honored the zone, she could not be talked into opening up sidewalk access to the building. It's very interesting that Senator McCain would choose to have his office in a building where the owners are not very interested in supporting our Constitutional right to free speech!

The day-long vigil was followed by an evening candlelight vigil. C read Julia Ward Howe's rousing Mother's Day declaration and we all joined together to sing a few songs. I thought the evening vigil was well-attended even though it conflicted with a Suns' playoff game.

C spent the entire day at Mother's Day Monday and we all owe her a debt of gratitude for her hard work. Even I , Pinky, only spent 2 hours out in the heat (my entourage complained of being hot and needing snacks), although I returned for the evening vigil.

Not Just Your Average Hallmark Holliday

Few people know that Mother's Day was actually first conceived as a peace holiday. Julia Ward Howe (of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" fame) was fed up with the damaging effects of war on both the soldiers and their families. She wrote the following Declaration in 1870:

Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with

Elizabeth Kucinich visits Phoenix (or, a Good Blogger Never Forgets her Camera)

Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, came to Arizona this past week to march and speak for immigrant rights. My friends AR and RR put together a couple of speaking engagements for her with the local peace community, too. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the event on Wednesday evening. Unfortunately, however, I forgot my camera (unlike good bloggers, who never forget).

If I had taken my camera, you would, right here, see a photograph of the Free Street Band, a group of 3 local peace activists who like to play drums and bagpipes and wear kilts. They are at most peace events around Phoenix and often make the event a celebration of peace rather than a sober condemnation of war. Cindy McCain even commented on the wonderful music during her speech last Saturday at the Senator McCain event.

Here, you would see a photo of Jeff Farias, local liberal radio talk show host, playing the stand up bass for some more very enjoyable music.

We were also entertained by an animated short discussing HR 676, a bill for universal, single-payer, non-profit healthcare in the U.S. The last opening act before Elizabeth spoke was Dustin James who performed his remake of John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance."

(Right here, had I had my camera, you would see a photograph of Elizabeth Kucinich) CODEPINK Phoenix does not endorse political candidates, but we do endorse any ideas that would lead to lasting, sustainable peace. Elizabeth spoke of some of these ideas and I would encourage anyone interested in what Rep. Kucinich has to say to research his platform. The idea of focusing on what is good about the U.S. instead of what is bad, is certainly a refreshing idea, as is the establishment of a cabinet level Department of Peace and Non-violence.

While the attendance of the event was disappointing, the message and the company were inspiring. I hope that some of the other candidates, both Democratic and Republican, will be open to meeting with Phoenix's peace community in the future.

In the end, this is the only image I have to share from the event. I really like the globe and peace symbol used on this sign, so I took the photo on my back patio this morning. So, I leave you with a dream of world peace.

McCain announces his run for the Presidency (for the 5th time this week)

Senator John McCain decided to grace his home state with his final announcement that he is running for president in 2008. I know, it's a big shock! I heard throught the grapevine, though, that we provided McCain with the largest protest group of all of his announcements. I think that is the least Arizona could do for him!
As you can see, it was a beautiful day to rally for peace. We had a plan to make noise for a while to make our point, and then we were going to have a silent protest while McCain spoke. Unfortunately, the event was hermetically sealed to ward off all free speech, so a silent protest would not have been effective.

This is about as close as most of us got. My good friends C and R from the End the War Coalition and Military Families Speak Out, respectively, managed to get inside and had quite an adventure, which I hope to write about shortly.

The rest of us kept up the noise, which, C and R tell me, the McCain faithful could hear inside the event. Apparently, every time we would start chanting, they would start chanting inside, thereby interrupting their candidate during his speech.

All in all, I think it was an effective rally, with about 150 peace activists outside the event. We received some media coverage and made the point that since McCain doesn't even adequately represent his constituents, he can't possibly represent the country.

Code Pink Phoenix was created in 2004, a couple of months before the 2004 election. The first really big event Code Pink Phoenix took part in was the 2004 Presidential Debate which took place in Tempe, Arizona, in October 2004.
